August, as an adjective, means respected and impressive. Not as a claim of who we are, but what we aspire to be.
Our founders, Chef Hans Christian and F&B professional Budi Cahyadi, united through a shared ambition to deliver memorable dining experiences where delicious food and an attentive sense of hospitality shine together as one.
We opened our doors as a restaurant at the end of 2021, however August was first established as an intimate private dining experience in 2019, a thoughtful approach in testing the waters of Jakarta’s evolving palate whilst navigating the shifting tides of the pandemic.
Today, August has received the acknowledgement of the American Express One To Watch Award 2023 and currently ranked #46 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2024 sponsored by S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna.

Just as August’s cuisine defies easy classification, Hans’ culinary foundation is rooted in his travelling and working experiences abroad, combined with a deep appreciation for the Indonesian flavors & culture he grew up with.
Initially captivated by art and painting, the chef developed a deep respect for craftsmanship that eventually shifted to a passion for culinary arts. Studying at Taylor’s University Malaysia and Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, he then honed his skills at Yono’s in Albany and Grant Achatz’s Next in Chicago. Upon returning from the states in 2016, he was given the freedom to express his creativity and distinctive flavors at Fairmont Jakarta as Chef de Cuisine.
It was in the heart of the city’s growing food scene that Hans realized his true aim was to establish his own restaurant as a vessel for his creative craftsmanship.
Budi’s lifelong values were built upon the warmth and connection experienced during home parties his parents regularly hosted, laying the groundwork for his hospitality ethos.
Upon completing his studies at Glion Institute of Higher Education in Switzerland, Budi’s career evolved through 12 years with the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, including a decade at Hyde Park, London, and two years in Jakarta. He subsequently took charge of a few outlets for a private F&B operator in Jakarta as Director of Operations.
As his experience grew, the seasoned hotelier held steadfast to the belief that great hospitality goes beyond great service. Anchored in the notion that “People may forget what you do, they may forget what you say, but they will never forget how you made them feel”, these words of wisdom by the renowned poet, Maya Angelou, became Budi’s guiding force behind creating a space where guests feel truly at home.
